What is FW-Plex?
Plex is a media server that lets users share movies and TV shows. It's like a private Netflix or Disney+. FW-Plex is my Plex server that I share with family and friends.
How do I get a Plex account?
Go to https://www.plex.tv/sign-up to create a free Plex account. I recommend you use one of the single-sign-on options (like Google or Apple) to create an account. Then send me an email and let me know you have an account and I will share my Plex server with you.
How do I install Plex apps?
There is a Plex app available for almost every device. Learn more about Plex Apps.
How much does Plex cost?
Plex is free to use. However, each family who uses Plex will be asked to contribute about $20 per year to help pay for maintaining and upgrading the Plex server. This helps pay for new server hardware, hard drives, backups, etc.
Can I share my Plex account?
Please do not share your Plex account.
Plex accounts are free, and everyone can have their own Plex account. Plex remembers your play history, such as what TV episode you are on or if you stopped half way through a movie, so it's convenient to have your own Plex account.
Do not share your Plex login with your friends or extended family. Your friends and extended family can use this Plex server, but they must create their own Plex account, then have them email me to request access to the Plex Media Server.
How do I ask for a movie or TV show?
If there are movies or TV shows you want added to Plex, email me and I will add it if I can.
How do I remove certain folders or content from my Plex account?
If you want to have certain folders hidden from your account or a child's account (such as Restricted or TV-MA), email me and I will hide them.
How do I fix a movie with the wrong language or missing subtitles?
If you see movies or TV shows with the wrong language, missing subtitles, subtitles out of sync, etc, please let me know. I don't watch everything I put on the server, so I won't know unless you tell me.
Why do I get an error when trying to play a movie or TV show?
If you get an error when trying to play a movie or TV show, make sure you have changed your app settings as explained on the Playback Settings page.
If your Samsung, LG, or other smart TV will not connect to the Plex Server, go to Settings -> Advanced -> Allow Insecure Connections and set it to Always. Read more.
What is Plex Pass?
Plex has premium features that are only available to Plex Pass subscribers. These features include:
- Multiple user accounts on one media device, so each family member can have their own "Continue Watching" section, and so certain folders can be hidden from specific family members.
- Download movies and TV shows to your laptop or mobile device so you can watch them offline (like on an airplane).
- Premium mobile apps for free (usually cost $5 per device)
- Everyone in your family will have access to Plex premium features with just one subscription.
Most users just use the free apps and do not purchase Plex Pass. But if you want the premium features, you can purchase a Plex pass here: https://www.plex.tv/plex-pass.
If you are thinking about getting a Plex Pass, I recommend trying Plex Pass monthly first (it's only a few dollars), and if you like it, then purchase a yearly or lifetime pass.
A lifetime Plex Pass usually costs about $120 dollars, but if you are willing to wait for the sale, every few months it goes on sale for about $80.
